Der Controller (HBA) kann bis zu zwei Festplatten nach dem SATA 3,0Gb/s Standard betreiben und zusatzlich bis zu zwei ATA/IDE Festplatten. Der Controller wird ublicherweise in PC's und Server betrieben, bei denen zusatzliche SATA 3,0 Gb/s Festplatten dem Betriebssystem zur Verfugung gestellt werden sollen, wobei die bisher verwendeten ATA/IDE Festplatten dem System auch weiterhin zur Verfugung stehen sollen.
